Bixby Acreage, Farm and Estate Ponds
New ponds, dredging, dig outs and repairs for Tulsa County properties.
Landowners in and around Bixby, Oklahoma ask us for three things: a new pond built right, an old pond cleaned out and deepened, or a damaged pond repaired. Each depends heavily on the ground the pond sits in, so here is what we look at on Bixby-area properties.
South Tulsa County is really two landscapes. Toward the Arkansas River, Bixby ground is floodplain bottomland: sandy loam and silty alluvium that drains quickly and often sits over a high water table. East and south of town the uplands turn to heavier clay and shale-derived soils, the kind that hold water well once a basin is shaped and compacted properly. Which side of that line your acreage falls on decides how deep we can dig, how the banks should be sloped, and whether seepage is a real risk.
Haikey Creek and a network of smaller draws carry runoff across the Bixby area toward the river, and plenty of acreage lots have a swale feeding the pond. Upstream development has increased runoff in a number of these small watersheds, so a spillway sized decades ago can now be undersized. Before recommending a spillway change, embankment repair or a deeper basin, we look at how much land drains to your pond.
Parts of Bixby along the Arkansas River sit in mapped FEMA floodplain, where fill and excavation can require a local floodplain development permit. Check with the City of Bixby or Tulsa County depending on where the property sits, and always call Okie811 before any digging. Most farm-scale ponds fall below state dam-safety thresholds, but larger embankments should be confirmed with the Oklahoma Water Resources Board.
A typical Bixby project: a two-acre property with a 30-year-old pond that has silted in to a few feet of water, cattails along the north bank and a washed-out spillway corner. The scope is usually a dig out to restore depth, reshaping of the eroded bank, and a stockpile area for the spoil that stays out of the drainage path. (Illustrative scenario, not a specific client job.)
New farm, stock and fishing ponds with excavation, basin shaping, embankments and grading.
Pond construction →Sediment and muck removal that restores depth in silted and shallow ponds.
Dig out and cleanout →For most farm-scale ponds in Tulsa County very little formal permitting is involved, but you should always call Okie811 before digging and check floodplain status. Larger dams and any work in a stream or wetland can trigger additional review. We help you find the right office for your parcel.
We build new ponds, dredge and dig out silted ponds, repair eroded banks and embankments, and restore older stock and farm ponds on acreage across Tulsa County and nearby areas.
